Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is Decibel?
Decibel uses your device's built-in microphone to measure sound levels. While it provides useful relative measurements for comparing environments and tracking exposure, it is not a calibrated scientific instrument. For occupational safety compliance or medical decisions, use a certified sound level meter.
What are NIOSH exposure limits?
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) sets recommended exposure limits to protect hearing. The limits are based on both loudness and duration:
- 85 dB — 8 hours maximum
- 88 dB — 4 hours maximum
- 91 dB — 2 hours maximum
- 94 dB — 1 hour maximum
- 97 dB — 30 minutes maximum
- 100 dB — 15 minutes maximum
- 103 dB — 7.5 minutes maximum
- 106 dB — Under 4 minutes
Decibel shows these warnings automatically when sound levels exceed safe thresholds.
Why does Decibel need microphone access?
Decibel uses the microphone solely to measure sound pressure levels. Audio is processed in real-time on your device and immediately discarded — no audio is ever recorded, stored, or transmitted. Without microphone access, the app cannot function.
What is HealthKit integration?
If you enable HealthKit integration, Decibel can record your environmental audio exposure to Apple Health when you save a reading. This helps you track cumulative noise exposure over time alongside your other health data. The feature is completely optional.
Can I export my measurements?
Yes. You can export your measurement history to a CSV file for analysis or record-keeping. Go to History and tap the export button.
Why are my readings different from another app?
Different apps may use different calibration methods, frequency weighting (A, C, or Z), and measurement techniques. Decibel uses A-weighting, which approximates human hearing sensitivity. Small variations between apps are normal — focus on relative changes rather than absolute values.
Does Decibel work offline?
Yes. Decibel works entirely offline and makes no network requests. All data stays on your device.
